Carriage watch in brass

  • by

Carriage watch in brass; German, c. 1700; dia. 3” (7.62 cm.).

This example is decorated with repousse (i.e. a design beaten out from the back of the metal), and fitted with an alarm set by turning the center disc until the desired hour comes opposite the tail of the hour hand. Four holes in the disc will take a steel point to assist in this operation. Between 55, and 60 is a slot with a peg marked ‘S’ and ‘N’ (schlagen, nicht schlagen-‘strike’ and ‘silent’). Quarter hours are not marked on the inner ring of the dial but diamond marks in the minute track indicate ‘half quarters’.
