Breguet Classique 5347 Grande Complication Twin Rotating Tourbillons

  • by

One the 7th of Messdor, Year 9 (June 26, 1801), the Ministry of the Interior of France awarded Breguet a patent for a new type of regulator called “Tourbillon,”featuring a permanently rotating escapement assembly. Designed to offset the effects of gravity, this ingenious device continues to provide unrivalled precision. Today, Breguet takes pride in perpetualing its founder’s celebratedinvention with te design of new Tourbillon models, including this exceptional timepiece. Technically and aesthetically innovative, it comes equipped with twin rotating tourbillon carriages powered by a hand-wound mechanical movement. Working independently one from the other, the tourbillons are coupled via differential gears. These transmit the toubillons mean rate to the rotating center plate. The time of day is shown by an hour hand mounted on the mechanism bearing the pair of tourbillons and a standard minute hand at center.

Ref. 5347PT/11/9ZU

Case: Round, in 950 platinum, with finely fluted caseband. Sapphire caseback, Rounded horns welded to the case and screw-pins to secure the strap. Water-resistant.

Dial: Ring-shaped forming a flange in 18k silvered gold. Individually numbered and signed Breguet. Chapter ring with Roman numerals. Breguet minute hand in blued steel. The hour hand is and extension of the bridge supporting the two tourbillon carriages. Engine-turned by hand, a center plate featuring two apertures for the tourbillons rotates in step with the passing hours.

Movement: Handwound mechanical. Twin tourbillon regulators mounted on the manually engine-turned rotating center plate. The two regulators are coupled by a set of differential gears that achieve a mean rate of the design’s two movements. The tourbillons effect a complete revolution in 12 hours. Movement numbered and signed Breguet. 50-hour power reserve, 16 ½ lines. 69 jewels, cal. 588, Breguet overcoil, Frequency 2.5 Hz. Monometallic Breguet balance with four gold regulating screws, Adjusted in 6 positions. The back of the movement bears a hand-engraved drawing representing the solar system, inspired by the 60-second rotation of the tourbillons on themselves and their rotation in tandem around a center axis over a 12-hour period.
