What Should You Look for In Men’s Watches?

  • by

It’s the unfortunate truth that there are more watches for men than women. As there are so many available, you might be overwhelmed. There are many things to consider when trying to choose the best one. To help, we ran through a list of 8 points. They’d not only result in the best-looking men’s piece but the handiest.

Durability

When looking for a men’s piece, you’ll realize that they’re more durable than counterparts. This is as they come with bigger bodies. Along with size, something else that helps would be the material on their case. Surgical grade stainless steel can handle scratches and is very waterproof. G-shocks are known to be the most resistant watches around. They don’t make use of the metal but tough resin. When they hit the ground, it makes them bounce.

Size

You should probably look for a watch that’s over 1.65 inches (42 mm). When it comes to the devices, bigger is better. Because they’d look more prestigious. You should make note of how big its case is, not its dial. Just don’t take things to the extreme. Although men have larger wrists, and people with smaller arms can still wear larger watches, you could get a device that’s too big. Your watch would wear you. Generally, over 1.96 (50 mm) may be the limit.

Strap

Timepieces can make or break an outfit. That’s why you’d want your unit to look its best. If you’re planning on wearing it to work, something grand would be needed. That’s why it should have a detailed leather strap. If it’s alligator skin or crocodile embossed, it would scream luxury.

You’d find most men’s watches coming with stainless steel builds, with the material even on their straps. The larger the metal bracelet, the grander it’d look. This is especially true if the steel on it was polished or plated.

Aesthetics

As mentioned, most manufacturers make watches for men. This is good, though. You have more choices to choose from. If you want to turn the most heads, you’d pick a unit that has an eye-catching appearance. You don’t have to look hard to find such a one. You’ve probably heard of the Hamilton brand before. They produced the Venturas, which look futuristic. They came to fame for being in the Men in Black movies, and they thankfully aren’t expensive to purchase. Companies like Devon exist too. Although their watches are pricey, they are literally out-of-this-world.

Brand

We just have to talk about the name you’re buying from. Working with a more prestigious one is ideal. Their logo would make people gawk at your wrist. Manufacturers from Switzerland are the best. Many think their devices are super expensive, but this is not the case. Brands like Tissot and Victorinox are around. Their watches are more sensibly priced.

Water Resistance

In our opinion, the best men’s watches come with adequate resistance ratings. You probably enjoy hiking. If your watch can handle water, you can take it with you, not worrying about it ever raining. It’d have to be resistant more than 165 feet (50 meters), though. If it’s any less, occasional splashes are all it can withstand.

Most dive watches are for men. They have rugged yet classic looks to them, making for perfect dress pieces. As their name suggests, they can handle considerable dips. They’ll be resistant up to 660 feet (200 meters). You’ll find some that can even handle over 1000 feet (300 meters).

Outdoors Features

Being water resistant makes them fit for the outdoors. However, there are more features they should have. To begin with, they should be water-proof. You’re going to get mud on your watch at least once. If it’s not water-proof, muck and dirt would stick. As mentioned earlier, stainless steel can fling them off. The same is true for silicone, resin, and plastic too.

We adore pieces with chronographs and tachymeters. They work as expert stop-clocks and help you track the distance between objects. When in the wilderness, such things would be useful. The two-look good too. With a timepiece with a chronograph, there’d be two-three sub-dials on its face. It’d catch anyone’s attention.

If you want an outdoorsy men’s watch, a compass would be great. It doesn’t have to have a fully functional one, just a fixed one on its bezel. It’d look eye-catching, just like a chronograph.

Crystal

Touching on durability again, the crystal your watch comes with is important. There are many available. Sapphire is known to handle a beating the best. What’s great about the crystal is that it isn’t just seen on more expensive watches. To get the most bang for your buck, the glass would have an anti-reflective coating. In the brightest of settings, you won’t blind yourself.

Seiko’s known for their affordable men’s devices. They don’t host sapphire on them. Instead, you’d see hardlex. The lens is much better than a regular mineral. They’ve started selling the lens to other companies, so if you see a men’s watch with the glass, you might want to pick it up.

Final Thoughts

Shopping for a men’s watch is equally difficult and easy. As there are so many options to choose from, you’ll always find something for you. However, settling on the right one can be tough. Considering everything we said, you’d know exactly what to look for. Size matters. Timepieces with larger cases look more prestigious. This is true for the material on their straps and the brand you’re buying from too. Swiss ones would turn the most heads as they are known to be very expensive when many of them are not too pricey.

Of course, how durable the watch is matters. We believe the best men’s watches would be able to handle at least 165 feet (50 meters) underwater. This lets it easily handle rain, which shouldn’t be an issue if you’re going to hike with it. The glass on its display and the material on its case influences how strong it is as well.
