Unitas is a historic Swiss watch movement manufacturer, renowned for its robust and reliable mechanical calibers. Established in 1898 by Auguste Reymond in Tramelan, Switzerland, Unitas initially produced pocket watch movements and later expanded into wristwatch calibers.
In 1932, Unitas became part of Ebauches SA, a conglomerate of Swiss movement manufacturers, which later evolved into the Swatch Group's ETA division. Under ETA, Unitas movements continued to thrive, particularly the calibers 6497 and 6498, which gained popularity for their durability and ease of maintenance.
Notable Movements
Unitas 6497: A manual-winding movement originally designed for pocket watches, featuring a small seconds subdial at 9 o'clock. Its large size and reliability made it a favorite for conversion into wristwatches, especially in pilot and military-style timepieces.
Unitas 6498: Similar to the 6497 but with the small seconds subdial positioned at 6 o'clock, catering to different design preferences. Both movements are known for their simplicity, robustness, and ample power reserve, typically around 46 hours.
These movements have been utilized by various watch brands, including Panerai, Hamilton, and Tissot, and are also favored by independent watchmakers and enthusiasts for custom builds and modifications.
Today, Unitas movements remain a testament to Swiss watchmaking excellence, offering a blend of historical significance and practical functionality.
