Benrus: A Legacy of American Watchmaking
Founding and Early Years
Benrus was established in 1921 in New York City by Romanian-American brothers Benjamin, Oscar, and Ralph Lazrus. The company's name is a portmanteau derived from "Ben" and "Lazrus." Initially, Benrus operated as a watch repair business before transitioning into manufacturing. They began assembling watches using Swiss movements imported from La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland, and casing them in the United States. This approach allowed Benrus to offer high-quality timepieces at competitive prices.
Innovations and Notable Models
Throughout its history, Benrus introduced several innovative and iconic watch models:
Sky Chief: Introduced in the 1940s, this chronograph became popular among pilots and was known as the "Official Watch of Famous Airlines," with some models bearing inscriptions from airlines like TWA and Pan Am.
Dial-O-Rama: A 1950s jump-hour watch featuring rotating discs to display hours and minutes, reflecting the era's fascination with futuristic designs.
Embraceable: A bracelet-style watch designed for women, combining elegance with functionality.
Military Contributions
Benrus played a significant role in supplying watches to the U.S. military:
DTU-2A/P: Issued during the Vietnam War, this field watch met MIL-W-3818B specifications and was known for its durability and precision.
Type I and Type II: Developed in the 1970s to meet MIL-W-50717 specifications, these dive watches featured monocoque cases and were used by elite military units, including the Navy SEALs and CIA operatives.
Challenges and Revivals
Benrus faced several challenges over the decades:
In the 1960s, the company attempted a hostile takeover of Hamilton Watch Company but was unsuccessful.
The rise of inexpensive Japanese watches led to financial difficulties, resulting in bankruptcy filings in 1977 and 1981.
Ownership changed hands multiple times, with the brand being acquired by Clinton Watch Company in 1981 and later by M.Z. Berger.
Despite these setbacks, Benrus experienced a revival in the 2010s, reintroducing classic models like the Type I and embracing its heritage to appeal to a new generation of watch enthusiasts.
