Blancpain: A Legacy of Swiss Watchmaking Excellence Since 1735
Historical Overview
Founded in 1735 by Jehan-Jacques Blancpain in Villeret, Switzerland, Blancpain is recognized as the world's oldest registered watch brand. The company remained under family ownership for nearly two centuries, during which it evolved from a small workshop into a prominent watch manufacturer. In 1815, Frédéric-Louis Blancpain, the founder's great-grandson, modernized production methods, transitioning the business from artisanal craftsmanship to industrial-scale manufacturing.
In 1932, following the death of Frédéric-Emile Blancpain, the last family member to manage the company, the firm was acquired by Betty Fiechter and André Léal. Due to legal requirements, the company was renamed Rayville S.A., succ. de Blancpain, with "Rayville" being a phonetic anagram of "Villeret." Despite the name change, the brand continued to uphold its heritage and commitment to quality.
During the quartz crisis of the 1970s, Blancpain ceased operations. In 1983, Jean-Claude Biver and Jacques Piguet acquired the brand name, reviving Blancpain with a focus on traditional mechanical watchmaking. In 1992, the Swatch Group purchased Blancpain, integrating it into its portfolio of prestigious watch brands. Today, Blancpain operates from Le Brassus, Switzerland, maintaining its reputation for excellence in horology.
