Baume & Mercier: Swiss Watchmaking Excellence Since 1830
Heritage and Origins
Founded in 1830 by brothers Louis-Victor and Célestin Baume in Les Bois, Switzerland, Baume & Mercier began as "Frères Baume," a watch dealership committed to producing timepieces of the highest quality. The company's dedication to precision and innovation led to rapid international expansion, including the establishment of a London branch in 1851 under the name "Baume Brothers." By the late 19th century, Baume & Mercier had gained a solid international reputation, winning ten Grand Prix awards and seven gold medals at international exhibitions. In 1892, the company set a precision record at the Kew Observatory with a chronometer pocket-watch equipped with a tourbillon movement, a record that remained unmatched for over ten years.
Formation of Baume & Mercier
In 1918, William Baume partnered with Paul Mercier to establish Baume & Mercier in Geneva. The firm specialized in manufacturing wristwatches, particularly models with unconventional shapes. In 1919, Baume & Mercier was awarded the Geneva Seal, the highest international distinction of the time for watchmaking excellence.
Design Innovation and Women's Timepieces
During the 1920s and the Art Deco period, Baume & Mercier embraced creativity and avant-garde design, establishing its style and leaving an indelible mark on watch design. The brand recognized the importance of women's emancipation and created a number of exquisitely creative and modern ladies' watches, proving that watches for women are not merely miniaturized versions of men's models. In the late 1940s, Baume & Mercier launched one of its most successful models: the Marquise.
